Masterworks: Brahms' "Requiem"

"Sorrow turned into joy" is the theme of this Romantic era masterwork inspired by the passing of Brahms’ mother as well as his close friend and mentor Robert Schumann. This stirring setting of biblical texts will be performed in English in a two-piano version arranged by Brahms himself. More ravishing, heartfelt music cannot be heard. With pianists Michiko Otaki and Seth Davis, and baritone soloist Matthew Hoch.  PROGRAM NOTES

The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace

Griffin Choral Arts will present the sensational, eclectic oratorio composed in 2000 by Welsh composer Karl Jenkins in a world-premier staging with original choreography by Griffin Ballet Theatre director Mitch Flanders. Into the usual Mass form "The Armed Man" incorporates diverse texts from Malory, Dryden, Swift, Tennyson, Kipling, the Qur'an and the Mahàbharàta, in a compelling account of the descent into and terrible consequences of war. Accompanied by an orchestra of strings, brass and percussion, "The Armed Man" will thrill your senses and stir your emotions.
